Farmers Markets: Enjoy the Harvest
Fall is definitely here: cooler weather and shorter days. A reminder to get outside and make the most of our beautiful fall weather.
One of my favorite ways to do this? Head to a local farmers market. It checks so many boxes off my weekend list: buy locally-grown food, get some fresh air and have a little fun with the kids. Plus, now that farmer’s market season is beginning to wind down, there are some food bargains to be had.
For a little added fun to your farmers market visit:
- Take a bite…or two: The kids love sampling their way through the market, and most vendors are happy to provide a taste test.
- Check out the unusual stuff: Ever heard of bitter melon, held a giant Italian squash, or tasted a persimmon? The kids love going on a scavenger hunt for new and unusual finds. Sometimes we bring them home to try after getting cooking tips from the farmer, sometimes we decide looking is the best option. Whatever we do, it’s always an adventure, and all of us walk away learning something new.
- Find a Fall Harvest Festival: Some area markets are having their last hurrahs as the weather cools off. A few to enjoy this month include the Bonner Springs Farmers’ Market Harvest Festival, Lee’s Summit Harvest Fest and Jump into Fall at City Market.
Enjoy the taste of fall!
